I thought I should go back into dancing. I didn’t want to do ballet again. I didn’t want to do jazz or hip hop, I want something different so I thought I’d try pole dancing—the exercise class. So, I signed up for my first class and I actually sat in my car and cried my eyes out. It was very overwhelming because the stigmatism behind being a pole dancer. I wasn’t taking my clothes off or anything! Basically, I cried and thought I got a good workout in and decided to try the choreography class next. And I tried it, fell in love with it, stuck with it then when I went to my theatre company during the summer, I found another pole academy. When I was there with some of the girls, they said they were going to go to a club for amateur night and encouraged me to come along. And being my good , Catholic self, I thought, ‘I would never do that! I would never!’ I did it. (laughs) And the moment I stepped on stage and started taking off my clothes, I felt liberated. It was amazing and I only made $7 because of the competition and I didn’t win. But I still have those $7 in my wallet to this day! And, since then, I fell in love with it. I went back to school and started getting my dancer’s permit and I started auditioning with clubs. I fell in love with it and the moneywas instant. It was great and I started dressing up and looking sexy! Basically, for those three years I was in Graduate School, during the summer, I would go back to my clubs and make money. I’m still doing both, basically.
CJ: Why did you decide to take the next step into professional porn?
Brandi: Last year, I was at one of the clubs where I live and management was making me mad and the house fee was a lot and I wasn’t making much money in the clubs. Later on that night, when I was talking to my old agency, I said, ‘What about Brandi Swan’? I googled it and no one else had it. I liked ‘Swan’ because it felt elegant and sophisticated but flirty and loyal and I chose ‘Brandi’ because it still felt bouncy and had an I at the end like ‘Confetti’. So, it still felt like me, if that makes sense.
