Asa Akira Interview

Keith Mason Interviews Asa Akira

Asa Akira

Let’s start at the beginning: Can you tell us how you entered the adult industry initially? What was your motivation concerning your career choice?

Asa Akira: I remember just really glamorizing porn in middle and high school – I was always curious about sex, wanting to be more sexual. As soon as I graduated, I started working at a dungeon in NYC. After a year of that, I went into stripping, and then did a year on a radio show, where I met Gina Lynn. I did my first girl/girl scene for her production company, and from there it just snowballed pretty fast.

Where did you grow up? What was that like?

Asa Akira: I was born in New York City, and I was raised there mostly, with a few years spent in Tokyo. They’re obviously hugely different, culturally, but between the two places, I am definitely a true city girl. I despise nature, and I’ve never lived in a stand-alone house. The thought terrifies me, actually- I can’t imagine ever living in anything but an apartment building. I was a good student and an overall good kid until I hit my teens, and discovered weed and boys.

For anybody who hasn’t seen you work, pick out a couple of movies they should see. You are exclusively contracted to Wicked Pictures, what do you enjoy most about working for this studio? What are the advantages?

Asa Akira: Recently, I just did a big movie called Holly… Would, directed by Brad Armstrong. It’s the biggest movie I’ve done, it’s the biggest role I’ve played, so it’s very dear to my heart. There’s something like ten sex scenes in the movie, 8 or 9 in which I’m a part of. I just watched it myself, and I have to say, it’s really fucking good. Brad also had another movie come out called Aftermath. I’m only in one scene, it’s actually a jessica drake movie, but it is SO good I can’t not promote it.

Wicked is a company I’ve wanted to be contracted to since pretty much the very beginning. A lot of people were surprised when I signed with them, but to me, it felt like I got what I had wanted all along. I think people were curious to see what would happen, because I’m known for my rougher sex scenes – but signing with Wicked hasn’t changed my style of sex at all. They’ve kept me busy with all the anal, DP, group scenes I love, and I honestly haven’t had a moment where I thought “man, I miss the gonzo days.” In fact, I’ve done more DP’s in my one year with Wicked, than I had my entire freelance career.

Do you enjoy the acting element of performing in adult movies? What’s your favorite character that you’ve gotten to play and your favorite sex scene?

Asa Akira: The acting stuff is still very new to me, and I’m having so much fun with it. It’s much harder than the sex, no pun intended. The Wicked roster of directors have been very helpful and patient with me, so I’m very lucky to have them to guide me. My favorite character I’ve played so far is Holly in Holly…Would. I also really loved my role in Stormy Daniels’ The Right Amount of Wrong, where I got to act with real-life twins Adam and Zach. That was a real treat. The only way that could’ve been better is if the twins DPd me.

My favorite sex scene… There are seriously too many to name. The first time jessica drake and I had sex was in a movie called Sexpionage, and it was just crazy… I think at one point during the scene, we were fucking so hard and so lost in it, that we somehow ended up off-set – we didn’t even notice until the director had to yell cut, and have us come back in front of the camera. Again, no pun intended.

There’s an orgy in Holly…Would that is probably my favorite orgy of all time. In a scene like that, with so many people, it’s such a special thing when everyone is in sync, totally on their A-game, with good chemistry among all the players. It was magical.

Recently you have published the very successful autobiography “ASA AKIRA INSATIABLE – PORN: A LOVE STORY”, what can you tell us about it? How was your experience writing this book? Is it something you would do again?

Asa Akira: Reading and writing are things I’ve enjoyed since I was very young. When I was a kid, like 8 or 9, I wanted to grow up to be a writer. So when the opportunity came along, I hopped on it right away. The writing part took about 9 months, and that was the easiest part- it was picking the title, the cover, marketing it, all the surrounding stuff that was hard. I definitely want to write another book, for sure. Eventually, I’d love to write fiction.

What makes for a good day on the set of an adult movie shoot? Any interesting or humorous stories you can share?

Asa Akira: I’d say good chemistry is the most important thing. Not just among the people fucking, but everyone on set, including the crew. That probably goes for any job, though.

The other day, jessica drake and I shot a scene in “Sinners” (coming soon) where we were in a cage, blowing three guys together, in front of a party of people. jessica decided to whip out flavored lube, something I’m not a fan of, in general- I’m more of a spit person. The lube was the java mocha flavor from the Wicked Sensual Care line, and it was so delicious, that before we knew it, everyone was sucking dick on set, including the extras. I know this sounds like an ad for Wicked’s lube line, but I swear to you it’s not – it was hilarious, more than anything. If penises naturally tasted like that, I’d be permanently on my knees.

What do you do in your leisure time to feed your soul and to enjoy life? Any hobbies?

Asa Akira: In my leisure time I write, watch TV and movies, read… I’m a definite homebody. I’d be great on house arrest.

What about favorites – favorite movie, T.V. show, musical artists? Someone told me that one of the movies you like is “SNOWPIERCER”, what do you like in this movie?

Asa Akira: That’s impossible to pick just one of each! I always wonder what “favorite” actually means- is it the one that had left the greatest impression on me, or is it the one I indulge in the most? Because those are two very different things. I love Bad Lieutenant (with Harvey Keitel, not Nicholas Cage), Mean Girls, Silver Linings Playbook, Let the Right One In, American Psycho… I also love documentaries. I Think We’re Alone Now and Winnebago Man are probably my favorites. Imposter is pretty amazing too. Snowpiercer was probably one of my favorite movies to come out in the last year, which was totally unexpected. Tilda Swinton is just awesome, she’s one of those actresses I’ll watch in anything. I really trust her taste.

For TV shows, the shittier, the better. I love really bad reality shows. I’d watch Real Housewives of Anywhere.

I’ve been pretty much listening to the same music since highschool. I love Atmosphere a lot.

For books, I love Chuck Palahniuk, David Sedaris, Augusten Burroughs, Agatha Christie, Chad Kultgen… my favorite book is probably either Invisible Monsters by Palahniuk, or The Secret History by Donna Tartte.

Are there any current or upcoming projects in the works that you would like to mention? Anything you’d like to say to the readers and your fans?

Asa Akira: I just did a big Stormy Daniels movie called “Pretty Dangerous.” I’m not sure when it gets released, but it stars myself, Stormy, Anikka Albright, Chanel Preston, and Allie Haze. We play spies, and I can’t wait to see it- Stormy had us doing some pretty crazy shit. Allie drove a speed boat, Anikka scuba dived, I was hung upside-down from a ceiling… it was a lot of fun to shoot. Definitely keep your eye out for it!
